About Freemasonry

Expressing a desire to join the fraternity is the first step to becoming a freemason. What attracts a man to Freemasonry? Every man comes of his own free will and accord, with his own individual needs and interests. One man may join so that he can associate with other men who believe that only by improving themselves can they hope to improve the world. Another man may join because he is looking for a focus for his charitable inclinations. And yet another may be attracted by a strong sense of history and tradition. Many join simply because they knew a friend or relative who was a freemason and they admired that man’s way of living his life

Questions About Freemasonry? We have answers!

General Freemasonry Questions

Freemasonry is the oldest and largest fraternity in the world. Freemasonry derives much of its symbolism and structure from a history stretching back to the medieval stonemason guilds, and beyond. Freemasonry has been part of British Columbia’s history since 1859, and part of Delta since 1920. Since that time many prominent builders of this community and province have been active, committed Freemasons. Freemasonry is not for everyone, but is it for you?

Masonic meetings typically include a mix of tradition, education, and fellowship. Members conduct lodge business (including charitable initiatives), and participate in education or ceremonies that reinforce Masonic values. Meetings also provide an opportunity for building strong bonds of friendship.

Freemasonry is built on three core values: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

  • Brotherly Love – Treating all people with kindness, respect, and fairness.
  • Relief – Helping those in need through charity and service.
  • Truth – Upholding honesty, integrity, and the pursuit of knowledge.

These principles guide Freemasons in their personal growth and contributions to society.

Membership & Joining

To be eligible for membership in Freemasonry, an applicant must satisfy the following qualifications:
– The ability to read and write in English.
– Have resided in British Columbia or the Yukon for the previous six months.
– Be 21 years or older, and capable of supporting himself and those dependent upon him.
– Have a belief in a Higher Power
But above all, you should have a desire for self-improvement, and being part of something bigger than yourself.

No. In fact, Freemasons do not solicit members. One phrased sometimes heard is “2B1Ask1” or “To Be One, Ask One”. We won’t ask you to join, we’ll wait for you to askus.

Becoming a Freemason is not something you decide on Monday, and you’re done by Thursday. Freemasons value informed decision-making, so the process takes as long as it takes. Normally, the minimum time you would expect is about 2 months from first contact, to initiation.

After joining, you’ll progress through three degrees, each teaching important Masonic lessons. You’ll have the opportunity to attend lodge meetings, visit other Lodges, participate in events, and more. Freemasonry is a lifelong journey of learning, personal growth, and camaraderie. How involved you become is up to you!

Freemasons In The Community

Freemasonry offers a chance to be part of something bigger than yourself, and to develop as an individual. Freemasonry is about personal growth through its focus on integrity, self-improvement, and lifelong learning. It provides a strong sense of community, fostering lasting friendships and mentorship.

Absolutely! We have regular social opportunities and take part in different events both with our own Lodge, and at other Lodges. Check out our Facebook page to see what we’ve been up to lately!

For public events, absolutely! Even though the ceremonies and such are done behind closed doors, we have a wide range of events that are open to anyone, including spouses\ significant others, extended family, friends, children, and so on. From games night to pub nights, or BBQ’s and community events, there are all kinds of opportunities to have a fun.

Myths & Misconceptions

Definitely not. In fact, specific religions are one of the topics we don’t talk about in Lodge, simply because it can be such a divisive topic. Freemasonry has never been about religion, and never will be.

Definitely not. Politics is the other topic we don’t discuss in Lodge, because like religion, it can be very divisive. Although individual members may be involved in politics or may even be politicians, it’s not a subject we discuss in Lodge.

Absolutely not. Freemasonry is open to any man who believes in a higher power. We have members of different faiths, from all over the world. Your faith is yours, and yours alone… as it should be.

Maybe…..?
Seriously though, no we don’t have hidden treasure, nor do we know where the Ark Of The Covenant is. Our only “hidden treasure” is that which we develop from within ourselves. Our only “secret knowledge” is the knowledge of self that comes with time, effort, education, and awareness.
